Trump's visa restrictions: international students are turning to the UK

Last year, over a million international students studied in the U.S., contributing $43 billion to the American economy. However, due to President Trump's tightening of the F-1 student visa, the number of international students at universities and colleges has significantly dropped. The temporary suspension of student visa interviews, changes in visa processing, and a more rigorous screening system, including social media checks, have continued to decrease the number of student visas. The situation was made worse by the revocation of over 6,000 student visas based on allegations of educational espionage and supporting terrorist organizations in Gaza.

Many students who did get their visas received them just a week before their orientation, while others were unable to get timely visa appointments or had their visas denied. These issues have prompted them to move their studies to the UK. It is estimated that the U.S. will see a drop of around 150,000 new international students this fall semester, resulting in an estimated loss of $7 billion and over 60,000 jobs.
