Daughter of priest, 20, is arrested by ICE for overstaying her religious visa for two years
Yeonsoo Go, a 20-year-old Korean Purdue University student, was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on July 31. She had come to the U.S. on an R-2 dependent visa in 2021 with her mother, who is the first female priest of the Anglican Church of Korea.
Go's lawyer states that her visa is valid until the end of this year, but the U.S. Department of Homeland Security claims it expired more than two years ago. This has caused outrage among religious, civil rights, and Korean American organizations.
Her lawyer and family say that her residency was officially extended in 2023, and she is a legal student at Purdue University. Go was arrested on her way back from an immigration hearing at the Federal Plaza in Manhattan, where she was seeking a visa extension. She had received a new court date for October, but five plainclothes ICE agents were waiting outside the courthouse and detained her.
