U.S. Senator Sends Letter to Homeland Security to Tighten Visa Rules

Chuck Grassley, a Republican senator, has sent an open letter to the Secretary of Homeland Security. In the letter, he requested a thorough review of work authorizations granted to student visa holders, essentially calling for tighter visa application scrutiny.

His reasoning is that the work authorizations issued to student visa holders are making it difficult for American citizens to find jobs. He also alleges that these individuals may be involved in technology theft and espionage. As an example, he cited over 30,000 Chinese student visa holders who have work authorizations in the STEM fields.

While there may be honest, hard-working people who genuinely want to study, we cannot ignore that most of the people who commit technological espionage are Chinese nationals who have studied in the US. This is why the senator has requested tighter regulations on work authorizations for student visa holders. It remains to be seen what the impact of this letter will be.
