US Visa Policy Changes for International Students

Based on the news that came out recently, the new guidance from the US State Department states that all student visa applicants must have their visa interviews in their country of citizenship. This essentially means you must apply for your student visa in your home country. This implies that applying for a visa at a US embassy in other countries like Thailand, Cambodia, Philippine or Vietnam, which was a common practice for those who found it difficult to get a visa in our country, will no longer be allowed.

As everyone knows, getting a visa interview in our country can take a very long time as you have to wait for the date they provide. Many people who couldn't wait would travel to neighboring countries to apply at the US embassies there. This change effectively bans such applications in other countries.

As a result, student visa applications will likely face longer delays than before, meaning that if you plan to study in the US, you will need to apply for your visa at least a year in advance. This announcement, which became effective on September 6, is a nightmare for anyone planning to go to the US for their studies.
