Canada is still attracting international students

Canada is a popular destination for international students, with world-class business schools like the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management and UBC Sauder School of Business holding top spots in the Global MBA Ranking. So, what do you need to get a student visa, or Study Permit, to study in Canada?

When applying to study in Canada, the most important document is a passport that will remain valid for your entire stay. You'll also need two passport-sized photos, a letter of acceptance from your chosen program, and if required, a Provincial or territorial attestation letter (PAL/TAL) from the province where your university is located. Proof of funds is also essential. It's important to show you have at least CAD 21,000 to cover tuition fees, travel costs, and living expenses for the first year. Additional required documents may include proof of accommodation payments, proof of a student loan, a Canadian bank account, or a letter of support from a sponsoring individual or organization.

Other documents that may be required are a Letter of Explanation detailing your reasons for wanting to study in Canada, a medical exam certificate, and a police clearance certificate. The processing time for a Canadian student visa can range from six weeks to three months, and it is recommended that you apply at least six months before your study term begins. A great benefit of studying in Canada is that you are allowed to work part-time on a student visa, for up to 24 hours per week.

For those who have completed an MBA or master’s degree in Canada, you can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) within 180 days of finishing your studies to live and work for up to three years. A key requirement is that the degree program must be at least eight months long. While immigration policies have recently tightened, Canada continues to attract top talent from around the world by offering a pathway from education to employment and permanent residency.
